Cuba Marks World Blood Donour Day

HAVANA - The Cuban government launched a national blood donation program on Monday to mark the World Blood Donour Day, which fell on June 14.

The Ministry of Public Health said in a statement that the program was a "success" as it attracted a broad participation of the Cuban people in all parts of the country.

"More than 500,000 people have donated their blood during the campaign," it said.

The World Blood Donour Day was established in honor of famed Austrian biologist Karl Landsteiner who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the Rhesus factor which allows classification of different blood groups.
