Porteadores
Threaten Traffic
Chaos
The next round
of protests by
the Porteadores
(informal taxi
operators) is
expected to be
very aggressive
and cause
tremendous
headaches for
drivers around
the Central
Valley. More
than 10.000
porteadores are
expected to take
action against
the government's
inaction to
resolve their
complaints.
The problem of
the porteadores
is being
inherited by the
Chinchilla
government after
the Arias
administration
failed to
provide a
permanent and
lasting
solution.
The porteadores
are against the
planned change
in the Ley de
Comercio
(Commercial
Code) that
eliminated the
word "personas"
and thus would
make their
carrying of
passengers
illegal.
José Alberto
Alfaro,
president of the
Cámara
Costarricense de
Porteadores,
does not doubt
that the
porteadores will
take to the
streets, it is
just a matter of
when and where.
Alfaro said that
the government
has promised a
quick change,
but if that
doesn't happen
will be then be
forced to
pressure the
politicians,
that they be
honest and
fufill their
promises.
The problem of
the "porteo" has
been around a
long time,
coming to a head
during the last
years of the
Arias
administration
and will will
fall on the
shoulders of the
ministro de la
Presidencia,
Marco Vargas and
presidenta,
Laura
Chinchilla.
