Residents Strike
At State
Hospitals
Indefinite
The strike by
more than 500
medical
residents at
state hospitals
that began on
Monday has no
end in sight.
Alexis Castillo,
president of the
Unión Médica
Nacional, said
the strike
action is
indefinite,
lasting until
CCSS authorities
make changes to
or eliminate the
"Contrato de
Aprendizaje".
At the centre of
the controversy
is the
requirement by
the CCSS - Costa
Rica's Social
Security - for
doctors to pay a
fine of ˘32
million colones
if they do not
stay with the
state health
system after
finishing their
residency.
Rosa Climent,
medical director
of the CCSS,
said that some
changes may be
made, but any
major changes
can only be made
with the
approval of the
board of
directors and a
full analysis
report.
