Diesel Oil Spill Causes Severe Pollution In Bolivia

LA PAZ - A traffic accident of a tank truck loaded with 15,000 liters of diesel oil began affecting the natural reserve of Colorada Lagoon, located in Potosi department in the south of Bolivia, the Defense League of the Environment (Lidema) said on Tuesday.

According to Lidema's experts, the spill has begun damaging the environment. The tank truck, owned by Tierra Ltd., turned over on June 2 in the road bordering Colorada Lagoon in the Fauna Reserve Andean Eduardo Avaroa, located in the southwest of Potosi in the valley of Sulor River that passes by a wetland.

The wetland and Sulor River flow into the northeast of the Colorada Lagoon.

According to the guards of that area, at least 7,000 liters of diesel oil were spilt.

The Lidema said the amount of spilt diesel oil is enough to generate an

ecological disaster, affecting the wetland and Sulor River.

The Tierra Ltd. has already begun the cleaning works, in order to prevent the spill from further contaminating the Colorada Lagoon.
