Limón Port Complex To Cost us$950 Million

The cost of building and operate a new port complete in Costa Rica's eastern province of Limón will come with a us$950 million dollar price tag, says port authority president, Allan Hidalgo.

Hidalgo explained that the original us$800 million dollar budget estimate back in 2004 is no longer realistic. The new estimate follows a survey by the Dutch firm Royal Haskoning.

The tender process originally launched in 2009 has also been delayed again as one of the participating firms is requesting more time to present its offer.

The port complex will take in the operations of Limón and nearby Moín which will allow capacity to handle "panamax" vessels.

Panamax is a term for the size limit for ships traveling through the Panama Canal. The size is limited by the width and length of the available lock chambers, by the depth of the water in the canal and by the height of the Bridge of the Americas.
