Caldera Could
Re-Open In Weeks
And Not Months
Altough the
Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
is not giving a
specific date,
Alejandro
Molina, director
of public works,
said the road
could re-open in
several weeks.
According to
Molina, the road
concessionaire,
Autopistas del
Sol, is busy
working away on
the 11
kilometres of
closed road
beetween Orotina
and Atenas,
where serious
problems with
the stability of
the slopes
causing
landslides and
rockfalls.
The work by
Autopistas
includes
reducing the
steepness of the
slopes, while in
other areas they
are covering the
rockface with
anchored
shotcrete.
Molina said that
without traffic
on the road the
work is moving
quickly and the
road could be
re-opened in
weeks and not in
months as had
originally been
thought.
For now
Autopistas will
not allowing
anyone on the
road, including
the news media
to report on the
advance on the
work. Nor is
Autopistas
saying how much
it is losing
daily from toll
collections.
According to
Autopistas it
says it has
already invested
us$40 million
dollars in the
"slope
maintenance
work" and will
have to invest
up to us$2
million more to
complete the
work.
The road had a
traffic volume
of 15.000
vehicles daily
the week prior
to the closure. |
