No "Veranillo"
This Year?
The “Veranillo
de San Juan” is
a solstice from
the heavy rains
each year in
June. But this
year there may
be no Veranillo.
The Instituto
Meteorológico
Nacional (IMN)
is forecasting
that the
phenomenon will
be very light
this year,
almost not felt
at all, as it
has been in the
past.
According to the
IMN, the
expected
Veranillo on
June 23 and 24
will be filled
with rain,
though not as
heavy as during
the rest of the
season.
The Veranillo is
usually a period
of light winds,
little rain and
lots of
sunshine.
Solstices occur
twice a year,
when the tilt of
the Earth's axis
is oriented
directly towards
or away from the
Sun, causing the
Sun to reach its
northernmost and
southernmost
extremes.
The name is
derived from the
Latin sol (sun)
and sistere (to
stand still),
because at the
solstices, the
Sun stands still
in declination;
that is, its
apparent
movement north
or south comes
to a standstill.
