Honduras: Red Alert because
of Dengue Fever
TEGUCIGALPA - Honduran health authorities
analyzed the possibility to decree a red
alert due to the increase of dengue fever in
the nation, in which 10 people have already
died among more than 11,000 infected.
The emergency plan is addressed to increase
the number of beds in hospitals, assign more
medical personnel and increase capacity in
laboratories for blood tests.
Doctor Mario Roberto Ramos, head of Internal
Medicine at the Seguro Social Hospital in
Tegucigalpa, said the wards are already
filled and they are not enough to take in so
many patients.
"Before, these cases were coming
sporadically, but now, we are receiving from
10 to 15 patients daily," said Doctor Ramos.
Public health personnel will request the
Contingency Permanent Commission to give
them 10 camp tents with their respective
stretchers.
They will be installed around the hospitals
to take care of patients in stable
condition.
Tomas Guevara, head of Epidemiologic
Surveillance in the Honduran Public Health
Ministry reported that there is a total of
10,780 cases of dengue fever in the country,
and 461 of them are cases of hemorrhagic
dengue fever, with people under 19 years of
age as the main victims. |
