Merchants With
Smile From Side
To Side
Although the
majority of
drivers in the
Central Valley
(San José) have
been grumbling
and complaining
about the
closure of the
San José -
Caldera (ruta
27) from Atenas
to Orotina,
there is one
group with a
smile from side
to side - the
merchants along
the monte del
Aguacate, the
old road to the
Jacó.
Since the
closure of the
San José -
Caldera last
Saturday (June
12), the
thousands of
drivers used to
taking the new
highway in
making their
trip between San
José and the
Pacific coast
have been forced
back on the
"old" road.
And this has
brought life
back to the many
shops,
restaurants,
hotels and
gasoline
stations along
the old road.
"The bad luck of
some is the good
luck of others",
is the common
sentiment of
business owners
who, for many,s
saw their
livelihood go up
in smoke as
traffic on the
old road was
reduced to a
minimum.
Today, since
last January,
business along
the route is
brisk,
especially at
the Orotina
cross roads,
where a series
of small huts
had turned the
intersection
into a real
business centre.
The 11
kilometres of
the San José -
Caldera is
expected to be
closed for
several more
weeks or months
as the road
concessionaire,
Autopistas del
Sol, continues
work on making
the road safe. |
