Bolivia Fosters Ambitious
Housing Plan
LA PAZ - The Bolivian government has
announced an ambitious project to build
about 17,000 homes this year.
Deputy Minister for Housing and Urban
Development Bony Morales said the program
call for an investment of 650 million
Bolivian pesos (about $92 million).
The initiative aims to benefit low-income
people who do not have their own homes, and
who regularly live in rural and peripheral
urban areas, the minister said.
The program, known as Social and Solidarity
Housing (PVS), was created on July 12, 2006
through a presidential decree, and envisages
the construction of 10,000 homes annually.
From 2006 to 2009, the government-subsidized
program has provided about 13,000 of 43,000
homes planned; hence, the need for a boost
to that social policy.
