Oscar Lopez Has Sights On San José Mayorship

Óscar López, former legislator for the Partido Accesibilidad Sin Exclusión (PASE), will be making his bid for the mayorship in San José, heading head-to-head with long time San José mayor, Johnny Araya, in the December 2010 municipal elections.

López has the support of two other small parties, the Restauración Nacional and the Renovación Costarricense and the main party Partido Unidad Social Cristiana. An alliance with the Alianza Patriótica and Frente Amplio is also expected to help boost López to the mayor's chair.

López made his formal announcement on Monday before some 400 people at the Costa Rica Tennis Club, some few hundred metres from the San José municipal offices and the mayor's office.

López told his audience that is time for a change, criticizing the last two decades of Araya rule that has resulted in increased crime, problems with garbage on the streets and corruption of municipal officials.

To make his point, on stage a man masked as Araya and wearing a t-shit with the slogan "Adoquín Casino” and holding a plastic garbage bag, López offered it as a symbol to Araya to start clearing out his office.

"Araya did not pass the test", according to López and as such does not deserve to continue as mayor.

The municipal elections will be held on December 5, 2010.
