Doctors Join 10
Day Old
Residents Strike
At State
Hospitals
Patients of the
Caja Seguro
Social
Costarricense (CCSS)
or Caja will
find getting
medical
attention more
difficult today
as 350 doctors
last night
joined the
strike by
medical
residents of the
state hospitals.
The strike
action by the
doctors was
called by the
Unión Médica
Nacional (UMN)
union that
decided to give
the residents
their support.
Alexis Castillo,
president of the
UMN, explained
that the union
call does not
obligate doctors
to join the
residents
strike.
The main focus
of the residents
strike is the
requirement by
the Caja
demanding
payment if a
graduating
doctor does not
continue his or
her residency
program at a
CCSS hospital.
In addition,
residents want a
fairer system of
distribution of
residents to
rural centres.
The residents
strike affects
mainly large
hospitals and
are calling for
a work stoppage
at all the
country's
hospitals for
Thursday, even
where there are
no residents.
Primarily
affected by the
strike are
scheduled
surgeries and
outpatient
services.
Castillo
explained that
emergency
services are not
affected by the
strike, nor
medical
attention to
patients of the
AH1N1 or Dengue.
Talks between
the union and
the CCSS have
been ongoing,
but neither side
is willing to
give ground to
end the strike.
The strike is
already 10 days
old and will
continue until
there is
resolution.
