UN Report Warns of More
Illegal Drug Use
United Nations - Nearly 38 million people
worldwide depend on illegal drugs, while the
number of those who use them has been
estimated at 155 million-250 million,
according to a UN report.
According to the World Report on Drugs 2010
of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC),
marihuana is the most used drug, with a
total of 129 million-190 million addicts,
followed by metamphetamine, cocaine and
opium and derivatives.
The report, presented during a press
conference by UNODC Executive Director
Antonio Maria Costa, also says that 13.7
million to 59.9 million people of 15 to 64
years of age have used any type of
amphetamine in the past twelve months.
There are 10.5 million to 25.8 million
ecstasy users worldwide, with Oceania, Asia,
North America and Europe as regions with the
highest consumption.
UNODC highlighted the need to implement
greater efforts and add programs of
prevention, treatment and alternative
development to try to eradicate or curb drug
supply/demand by 2019.
North America remains the worldâ�Ös largest
cocaine market, followed by Oceania and
Western Europe. |
