Costa Rican
Police In Search
Of Serial Rapist
And Killer
The area nea the
Coleio Ulloa,
also known as
the Valencia,
that is the
intersection to
Heredia on the
autopista
General Cañas,
has become the
focus of an
intense police
operation, where
authorities
believe a serial
rapist is at
work following
the discovery of
the body of 28
year old Cindy
Esquivel Zuñiga
on Monday.
The naked body
of the young
woman was found
by a man walking
the area near
the college,
some 200 metres
from the bus
stop on the
autopista. The
young man had a
series of
machete and
knife wounds on
her neck in
addition to be
being sexually
assaulted.
Police say the
woman had gotten
off the bus on
Sunday morning
and had planned
to walk to her
home in Heredia
about 2
kilometres from
the bus stop
when she was
grabbed. Family
members told
police that
Cindy had left
work and was on
her way home
when they last
heard from her.
A massive search
and hunt of the
area by the
Organismo de
Investigación
Judicial (OIJ),
officers of the
Fuerza Pública (nationa
police) and
municipal
police, ended up
with the
detention of
several others
who are
suspected of
committing
assaults in the
area, living in
"ranchos" in the
wooded area off
the highway.
However, the
search did not
come up with the
suspected killer
of Cindy.
In an unrelated
incident, though
only several
hundred metres
from where Cindy
was found, on
the north side
of the highway
on Saturday
police recovered
the body of
Jonathan Mendoza
Aguirre, who is
from Puntarenas.
Mendoza was
found inside his
vehicle and with
a bullet to the
head.
The busy
intersection is
always under the
watchful eye of
the Policía de
Tránsito, but
only during the
day. At night
time and in the
early hours of
the morning, the
area is
desolate.
