Colombia Still World's Top
Cocaine Producer
BOGOTA - A Colombian official acknowledged
Wednesday that the country remains the
world's top cocaine producer, but was
overtaken by Peru in the production of coca
leaves.
Peru harvested 119,000 tons of coca leaves
in 2009, surpassing Colombia that produced
103,000 tons, making it the world's largest
coca producer, said Leonardo Correa,
coordinator of Colombia's Integrated System
for Monitoring Illicit Crops (SIMCI),
quoting a UN report.
However, Peru has rejected the report's
conclusion, saying Colombia had 68,000
hectares of land under coca cultivation last
year, while the figure for Peru was 59,800
hectares |
