19 Ecuadorians Arrested For
Illegal Fishing In Colombian waters
BOGOTA- A total of 19 Ecuadorians were
arrested for illegal fishing in the waters
of Colombian Pacific zone on Wednesday by
coast guards, local authorities said.
"Four Colombians and 19 Ecuadorians were
arrested over violating the rule of illegal
fishing in the Sanctuary of Flora and Fauna
of Malpelo when they were fishing on a
boat," Commander of the Naval Force Hernando
Wills told Xinhua.
He indicated that the vessel with Ecuadorian
flag was taken to the Colombian port of
Buenaventura (southwest), where more than 10
tons of tuna and yellow fin albacore worth
of 15 million dollars were seized.
The officer said that despite the
authorization to fish in Colombian waters,
the boat "Chasca" violated the rules that
ban fishing in the natural parks of Gorgona,
Sanquinga, Malpelo y Utria, located in the
Colombian Pacific region.
"The Embassy of Ecuador was already informed
of the arrest of their citizens, who were
transferred to authorities of immigration.
The illegal shipment was delivered to the
Colombian Institute of Rural Development,"
said Wills.
Malpelo Island was declared a wildlife
sanctuary by Colombia's Unity of National
Parks and Natural Heritage of Humankind by
the Organization of the United Nations for
the Education, Science and Culture. |
