Experts Find Oil Spill in
Peruvian Amazon
LIMA - An oil spill recorded in the Marañon
can cause irreversible damage to the
ecosystem of the northern Peruvian Amazon
region of Loreto, expert of the Research
Institute of the Peruvian Amazon Jose
Alvarez said on Wednesday.
Alvarez put into question the efforts of the
transnational oil company responsible for
the spill Pluspetrol, to minimize the
incident, reported last week, which is
already controlled.
Alvarez pointed out that the oil spill in
Saramuro, Marañon Wharf, one of the
tributaries of the Amazon, can irretrievably
affect the ecosystem of the largest jungle
region of Peru and more directly the health
of the residents of 300 communities located
on the bank of the river.
Pluspetrol is trying to eliminate oil with
chemical substances carried by a barge,
which can be cheaper but not recommended,
Alvarez added. .
The Development and Conservation Association
Cocama Head Alfonso López Tejada, said that
the affected population complaint Pluspetrol
used of chemicals to sink the oil and
prevent its visibility.
The company, which claims to have spilled
only 300 to 400 barrels, is trying to
minimize the problem as it always does, said
Lopez.
The commanding general of operations of the
Amazon of the Navy, Vice Admiral Carlos
Tejada said the extent of contamination will
be identifiable only within 15 days with the
test results of samples taken by technicians
from the Navy.
This official investigation was confirmed by
the Environment Minister Antonio Brack Egg,
who said that there will be sanctions for
those responsible for the spill, reported on
Saturday when an oil barge ran aground and
suffered a puncture in the hull.
According to Brack, the damage would be
minimal because the emergency was quickly
controlled with the help of the population,
which succeeded in transferring and storing
