Guatemala Appoints New Police Chief, Sacks Nine Senior Officers

GUATEMALA - The Guatemalan government Thursday appointed Jaime Otzin as chief of the National Civilian Police (PNC) and removed nine senior officers from service, according to news reaching here.

The reshuffle came after former chief of police Baltazar Gomez Barrios was arrested in March due to charges of stealing guns and trafficking drugs.

Otzin has worked for the PNC for 18 years and served as deputy director of special operations until Thursday. He became the fifth police chief during the current presidential administration.

The other nine officers were fired for failing lie detector tests during questioning linked to Gomez's charges, Interior Minister Carlos Menocal told a press conference, at which President Alvaro Colom said the state was committed to reforming the PNC.
