Smile, You Are On Camera! As Tránsito Looks To Cameras To Fine Drivers

Héctor Monge, director del Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi), said on Thursday that come next year cameras will be used to monitor traffic violations, as the video cameras will record the infraction that will used to generate a traffic ticket without the need of a traffic official or stop the driver.

Monge said that the process to buy and install the cameras will begin at the beginning of 2011.

The director explained that the plan is to install "infrared" cameras that will detect the infraction and using the license plate of the vehicle, notify the owner of the fine.

The cameras will be used to control items like the vehicular restrictions of San José and record drivers not stopping at a stop sign or red light.

Monge explained that, in addition to generate traffic fines, the cameras will help reduce traffic accidents as drivers will be more respectful of the traffic laws.

The system will be working 24 hours a day and take up the slack of the overworked and understaffed police force.

The director would not give an estimate of the cost of the project, saying that in San José the system can take advantage of the already existing fibre optic network that is currently being used by the municipality and the MOPT to control traffic lights and conditions.
