Protests Mark Honduras Coup Anniversary

TEGUCIGALPA - The Honduran People's National Resistance Front (FNRP) will carry out demonstrations throughout the country this weekend to protest the first anniversary of the coup.

Indigenous people, union members, women, and members of progressive parties affiliated with the front will take part in walks, sit-in, and pot-and-pan banging demonstrations to condemn the rupture in the constitutional order and remember the coup's victims.

Early on June 28, 2009, a group of soldiers, in connivance with the oligarchy, kidnapped President Manuel Zelaya from his residence and took him to the Palmerola military base by force, and from there to Costa Rica.

A de facto regime has usurped power ever since, unleashing repression against the opposition, with dozens of people either dead or injured, thousands of illegal arrests, torture, abuse, and other violations.

The FNRP, created the same day of the coup, is currently collecting over 1.2 million signatures to ask for Zelayas' return to Honduras, and to call for a national constituent assembly.

"Only with a new constitution we will have the means for a social and economic transformation in the country," FNRP leader Carlos H. Reyes declared.
