Panama to Tighten Security in
Darien
PANAMA - Panamanian President Ricardo
Martinelli pointed out Friday that security
will be tightened in in the Darien province
to stop drug trafficking operations in the
border with Colombia.
Martinelli visited the hospital where two
members of the State Border Service (SENAFRON)
are hospitalized, wounded on Wednesday,
after an antipersonnel land mine exploded in
Darien.
Those affected were surgically treated in a
hospital in the capital after being taken
from Darien by air.
The incident occurred on the shores Jaqué,
in the Darién, when the border control
officers were conducting a patrol and they
discovered a camp, allegedly used by drug
traffickers.
Martineli reiterated that ground and air
surveillance will be intensified, as well as
encourage drug traffickers to leave Panama.
