Public Angered Over Legislators Giving Themselves A Vacation

The good judgment of the current crop of legislators is again in question, this time their decision to go on vacation with less than two months on the job.

Legislators this week voted themselves their vacation period that, according to the president of the legislative assembly, Luis Gerardo Villanueva, will set the tone for the coming four years.

However, the majority of Costa Ricans interviewed on television and the print media, see it as another grab by legislators, remembering the salary hike of more than 60% they almost gave themselves within days of taking their "curules" (benches).

In that case, legislators backed down from approving their own salary hike following a public outcry and threats by Costa Rica's presidents Laura Chinchilla of a veto.

villaneuva explained that legislators "have the right" to five days vacation in July.
