Guatemalan Ex Minister of Government Probed

GUATEMALA - Former deputy Minister of Government Marlene White is under investigation for alleged connections to a criminal gang in Guatemala, reported on Sunday Prensa Libre daily.

The daily ensures that the research is carried out by the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) and the Office of Administrative Offences.

Banco, who also headed National Civil Police (PNC) office, has been apparently out of the country since one month ago.

According to the report, CICIG is looking for at least 12 policemen members of the security corps of Blanco, suspected of committing various crimes when they were at her service.

So far, five people were arrested, only two of them publicly identified, charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and forced disappearance.

Those captured were least 38 members of two groups that were under the command of Blanco set up in 2008 and 2009, one of them made up of members of the PNC and the other combined with civilians, according to the newspaper.

Allegedly, both groups were engaged in criminal and clandestine activities.

The then director general of the PNC Porfirio Perez broke up the groups in July 2009, but his successor, Baltazar Gomez, reinstated the dismissed at the request of Blanco.

Both Perez and Gomez are in prison for leading separate bands of organized crime, mainly drug-related.
