Legislative Assembly Moving To Zapote

Running out time and options, the president of the Legislative Assembly, Luis Gerardo Villanueva, said that a recently constructed building in Zapote could soon be the new home of the Legislature.

Villaneuva, who has undertaken to comply with an order by the ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) to vacate three buildings of the existing legislature complex in downtown San José, has been looking at options.

And the best option so far is 27.000 square metres building built by the construction company Elena Terán, at a cost of us$23 million dollars that would be financed by the Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE)..

Villanueva said that the deal has been made, now all that is required is the "visto bueno" (OK) from the Contraloría General de la República (Comptroller's office) and the BCIE.

The recently built buildings is some 200 metres from Casa Presidencial in Zapote.

Villanueva said that the option of building a new building was not viable, partly due to the timing constraints.

The legislature has been under pressure from the ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila, to vacate three buildings in the downtown complex due to substandard health conditions.

The ministra de Salud had issued an eviction order and is adamant that the 40 legislators and their support staff of 400 vacate the buildings immediately or be evicted.

On her Twitter page, Avila on Saturday expressed her pleasure on the move. "Every cloud has a silver lining" said Avila.
