Cyclists To Wear
Vests and Have
Headlights At
Night
The Ministerio
de Obras
Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
is reminding all
cyclists the
requirement to
wear a helmet
and a reflective
vest and a
headlight when
riding at night.
César Quirós,
director de la
Policía de
Tránsito
(traffic
police), made it
cristal clear
that the Ley de
Tránsito calls
for the use of a
helmet, as well
as a reflective
vest and
headlight at
least 30 minutes
to sundown and
30 minutes after
dawn.
The fine for
wearing a helmet
is ¢286.000
colones, for no
lights and/or
reflective vest
is ¢152.568
colones and for
riding on roads
with posted
speed limits of
80 km/h or over
(like autopistas)
¢38.142 plus,
court costs in
each case.
However,
Tránsito
(traffic)
officials are
not so fast in
taking out their
PDA (electronic
ticketing
device) to issue
cyclists
tickets.
The point is
clear on that on
the Santa Ana
section of the
San José -
Caldera where,
since the
accident of two
weeks when a
truck took down
an overpass, a
Tránsito is
posted daily
under the
remaining half
of the overpass
and idly sees
cyclists pedal
up and down the
highway with a
posted limit of
100 Km/h.
Notwithstanding,
Quirós assures
that his
officials will
be enforcing the
law and
ticketing
cyclists for
their own good.
