Gay Pride Hits Costa Rica

More than two hundre gay and lesbians used Paseo Colón and other dowtown streets to parade on Sunday to celebrate ( Gay Pride Day Día de Orgullo Gay).

Javier Umaña Rivera, one of the two organizers of the event, said that the purpose of the event this year, apart from honoring the rights that homosexuals in the country, is that they disagree is made the "referendum" by the acceptance of gay marriage.

"We are a minority and if we face the most, of course we're going to lose", he said.

Taking part in the event were also "transformistas" who perform regularly at homosexual clubs in San José like, Club Oh, La Avista, El Despite and Castilla, among others.

"This is a peaceful manifestation", said Rivera following the 3:30 start of the parade that began at the León Cortes statue on the east face of the Sabana park, running along Paseo Colon and Avenida Segunda, ending at the Parque Central.

Gay pride is the concept that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The movement has three main premises: that people should be proud of their sexual orientation and gender identity, that diversity is a gift, and that sexual orientation and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered.
