Zelaya: US Seeks to Whitewash Honduras Coup

TEGUCIGALPA - Overthrown Honduran president Manuel Zelaya accused the United States of trying to whitewash the coup that removed him from office in that small Central American nation one year ago.

The coup was planned at the US military base in Palmerola, Honduras by the US Southern Command, Zelaya said in an exclusive interview with the Telam news agency.

The former president emphasized that his country's soldiers merely carried out the violent aspect of the coup, and said the former de facto president, Roberto Micheletti, wasa figurehead.

In Zelaya's opinion, his violent overthrow was a consequence of his government's adoption of measures contrary to the interests of the White House.

He mentioned modifications to monetary, exchange and wage policies that contradicted the policies promoted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the signing of association treaties with Petrocaribe and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).

Zelaya reiterated that although the US Department always denied its participation in the coup, "time and U.S. public support to the coup and its perpetrators finally confirmed its participation."
