Venezuela Steps Up Anti-Drug
Strategy
CARACAS - Venezuela is stepping up its
comprehensive actions in the struggle
against drug trafficking and abuse,
including crime fighting, prevention and
rehabilitation for drug addicts.
The Director of the National Anti-Drug
Board, Nestor Reveral, said yesterday that
experts with that agency are preparing a new
prevention and treatment system in basic
areas, such as services and within homes.
One outstanding initiative is the opening of
family guidance centers, along with other
health institutions specializing in
attention and prevention activities, as well
as preparing communities for joining in
educational and therapeutical efforts.
Revereal also highlighted the promotion of
options for healthy recreation.
The main point is to structure a social
network aimed at acting together to face
this problem, said Reveral.
Venezuela is preparing this project with the
support of Cuban experts.
Reveral commented that the Venezuela's
biggest disadvantage is its proximity to
Colombia, the main cocaine producer, and
policies to fight this scourge are aimed at
preventing the trafficking of those
substances into Venezuela.
Referring to the collaboration agreement
with other nations to deal with the drug
problem, he said about 53 legal instruments
are in place with 39 countries, based on
strict respect for national integrity and
sovereignty.
About 30 tones of drugs have been seized to
date this year, and professionals from
different institutions managed to capture 10
capos demanded by different countries.
