Re-Opening Of
San José -
Caldera Will
Depend On
Geologists
Report Due Today
Although the
decision to
re-open the 11
kilometres
between Atenas
and Orotina of
the San José -
caldera was to
have been
announced on
Tuesday, the
ministro de de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT),
Francisco
Jiménez, said he
will wait the
results of two
reports first.
Jiménez
explained that
although
progress has
been made, there
are still two
important points
with outstanding
work, so that he
would not dare
say for certain
that the highway
would be
re-opened this
week.
"Tomorrow
(today) we will
have an
assessment of
the geologists
that could
eventually
estimate the
re-opening
date", said
Jiménez.
The minister
added that he
doubts that the
highway will be
re-opened for
the start of the
mid-year
vacations that
start this
weekend,
emphasizing on
the
concessionaire (Autopista)
to "soque"
(hurry) so that
vacations can
enjoy the
benefits of the
highway.
Notwithstanding,
Jiménez stressed
that he will not
sign the order
to re-open until
the geologists
say the
preventive
measures are in
place.
"As a challenge
I want to have
this (open
highway) but I
will not risk
the process",
said Jiménez.
The minister
said that once
the road is
re-opened,
outstanding will
be the reduction
of the slope
inclinations in
Atenas, as this
entails
expropriating a
number of
properties.
The Atenas -
Orotina section
of the San José
- caldera was
closed on June
12 in order to
avoid placing
drivers at risk
from falling
rocks and
landslides, as
well as to allow
Autopistas to
continue its
work of slope
stabilization.
