Power Plant Fire Keeps Nicaragua's Cord Island In The Dark

CORN ISLAND - A fire in Nicaragua's Corn Island has left some 12.000 residents without power for the weekend. The fire broke out in a power plant that supplies electricity to the island, a major tourist destination in Nicaragua.

No was reported injured in the blaze, according to local media reports.

The fire at the power plant, which was provided by Venezuela two year ago, broke out on Sunday due to a fuel leak that was fanned by strong winds.

Corn Island does not have a fire department. Residents used fire extinguishers, dirt and water to control the blaze.

The plant is totally inoperable and residents are asking the Ortega government to send a new power plant to restore electric service.
