President-Elect
Chinchilla Names First Minister
René Castro, a long time civil servant, was
the first minister to be named by
president-elect Laura Chinchilla to her
cabinet. Castro will head the Ministerio de
Relaciones Exteriores (Foreign Ministry).
Castro will replace Bruno Stagno, who will
be Costa Rica's ambassador to the United
Nations.
In his acceptance speech at Casa Amarialla,
Castro said he aspires to continue to
maintain the high regard of Costa Rica in
the eyes of the world that was earned by the
Arias administration in issues of peace,
disarmament and human rights.
Castro is a graduate of the Universidad de
Costa Rica and earned a master's degree and
doctorate at Harvard University in Boston.
