Organized Crime
Infiltrates Guatemala Police
GUATEMALA - The Guatemalan society is
witnessing another dark episode that reveals
organized crime infiltration in police
corps, after a gang inside the National
Civil Police (NCP) was dismantled.
NCP Chief Baltazar Gomez, appointed in
August 2009, and Analysis and Anti-Drug
Information Division Head Nery Bonilla were
arrested for allegedly leading a group
devoted to drug theft group.
A prominent officcer in the Police Port and
Airport Director's Office was also arrested
along with Baltazar and Bonilla.
Authorities said that dismantling a secret
drug-trafficking group, following an
11-month investigation, was a harsh blow to
the dark forces hidden inside the NCP.
The story comes from an incident that took
place in Amatitlan, southwest from the
Guatemalan capital, on April 24, 2009, when
five police officers died in which what was
called then an anti-drug-trafficking
operation, but it is already well-known that
it was not exactly so.
Those anti-drug police agents had already
stolen part of a drug shipment in a
warehouse and came back for more, but drug
dealers waited for them and opened fire.
The dead agents and others who escaped from
the armed clash were part of a gang that
used to steal drugs and weapons to sell them
later to gangs in and outside the country. |
