Nicaragua to Build
Largest Hydroelectric
MANAGUA - Nicaragua Environment and Natural
Resource Ministry (MARENA) submitted to the
National Assembly a project to build its
largest hydroelectric plant in Tumarin, some
280 km NE Managua.
Brazil state-run Electrobras and Empresa
Centrales Hidroelectricas de Centroamerica
of Queiroz Galvao Group will develop the
$799M investment.
The power plant will supply the national
electricity grid 220 mW and net annual oil
savings of two million barrels.
With completion set for 2014, this project
also involves building roads and several
other facilities of sensitive environmental
impact.
To compensate, the developers will plant one
million trees in 900 hectares in the
vicinity. |
