One Traffic Stop Cost Driver ¢858.000 Colones In Fines

We can only guess that José Pablo Mora Vargas was not current on the news of the introduction of the new Ley de Tránsito when he found himself having to pay up ¢858.000 colones (us$1.560 dollars) in one single traffic stop with three separate violations.

For one, he did not have his drivers license on hand, costing ¢381.420; did not have the 2010 Marchamo (annual circulation permit) paid, costing him ¢276.000; and did not have the current Riteve (annual vehicular inspection), costing him another ¢190.170.

In addition, transit police also confiscated the vehicle's license plate.

Vargas was stopped during a spotcheck by the Policía de Tránsito and the Fuerza Pública in La Legua, in Puriscal.

The man said that he borrowed the Mazda 626 from a family member and never imagined that he would be stopped in a spot check, who is a resident of Esterillos, Parrita, south of Jacó.

Now, the owner of the vehicle is faced with paying the 2010 Marchamo, getting the vehicle inspected and paying the appropriate court fines before he can claim the vehicle's license plates, while Vargas is stuck with the payment of the fine to renew his drivers license.

Important to note here, the tickets for the failure to have the Marchamo and Riteve are against the vehicle and not the driver.
