Violations in Honduras Denounced
TEGUCIGALPA - US Democrat congressmen
denounced the continuity of murders,
prosecution and abuse against leaders of the
Honduran resistance movement, opposed to the
June 28 coup in Honduras.
"Since current President Porfirio Lobo took
office, several opponents to the coup have
been beaten, attacked," said the legislators
in a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton published Friday at the digital
edition of newspaper Tiempo.
The letter mentions the case of trade union
leader and nurse Vanessa Zepeda, hanged on
February 3, after having received death
threatening because of her participation in
the resistance movement.
On February 15, workers leader Julio Funes
Benitez was shot to death close to his home,
and activist Claudia Brizuela was murdered
on February 24.
Unfortunately, these are just examples, said
the legislators, who warned that up to now,
no one has been taken to trial for such
facts.
President Porfirio Lobo signed an amnesty
for the responsible for the crimes related
to the June 28 coup.
These and other actions of the current
Honduran government let people think that
there is not enough will to take serious
measures against the criminals, the text
said.
The letter was sent to Hillary Clinton
because of the meeting she has scheduled
with President Lobo in Guatemala. |
