"Impugnación" Unit Functions Expanded

With the introduction of the new Ley de Tránsito, the function of the "unidades de impugnación" (or the "Challenges Unit" in our best translation) has been expanded to include authorization to return confiscated vehicles, license plates and drivers licenses.

The original function of the unit has been to take in complaints of drivers who feel they have been unjust traffic ticket.

Now the unit has taken on functions that once were performed by the juzgados de tránsito (traffic courts).

For the moment only four units are working.

In San José, the area with the greatest number of drivers and traffic tickets, drivers and owners of vehicles can make their challenges at the Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi) in La Uruca.

The other three units are the Tránsito offices in Cartago, San Ramón de Alajuela and the court building in Guápiles.

Coming soon, possibly as early as next week, the units in Alajuela, Pérez Zeledón, Liberia, Puntarenas and Limón, will be operating.
