Guatemala: Deputy Refuses to Leave Country

GUATEMALA - An opposition Guatemalan deputy informed of a plan to kill her has refused to leave the country, as suggested.

Government Minister Carlos Menocal, and the head of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, Carlos Castresana, notified the legislator for Encuentro por Guatemala, Nineth Montenegro, of that possibility.

The lawmaker herself made it public, while Menocal and Castresana considered it is an attempt to carry out an action that generates commotion and problems to the government.

As a result, they suggested her either to leave the country or have security guarantees.

Montenegro, who has decided for the second choice, offered no details of the plot to kill her, but stressed she refuses to abandon Guatemala.

The legislator said she never did so even in her most painful moment, when her husband was kidnapped in 1984, during the internal armed conflict.
