Colombian President Denounces Foreign
Meddling In Elections
BOGOTA - Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on
Wednesday denounced foreign meddling in his
country's presidential and parliamentary
elections.
"I want to denounce again in front of all
Colombians that there are foreign
governments banning presidential candidates
and try to impose a president in Colombia,"
Uribe said.
Uribe said he has a document to prove the
foreign intervention. But he did not give
further details.
Analysts said Uribe's attack was against
Venezuela, since Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez requested to seek alliances with
Colombian opposition groups.
In June last year, Venezuela froze its
diplomatic and trade ties with Colombia
after Uribe signed with the United States a
military cooperation agreement, which allows
the presence of U.S. troops in at least
seven Colombian military bases.
Last week, the government of the Dominican
Republic began to mediate between Venezuela
and Colombia. |
