Lines Ups At Drivers License Centre Reduced
By 80%
The announcement of
the reduced fines approved by legislators on
Tuesday had meant that thousands that have
been lining up from early hours each day has
diminished to a few hundreds, most
preferring to take a chance of getting
caught with an expired license, than spend a
day renewing.
Prior to Wednesday, the fine for driving
without a license or an expired license was
˘ . Legislators slashed that to ˘ ,
promoting many to say "me la juego" (I will
chance it).
The same sentiment is expected to be applied
to many other things like not respecting the
vehicular restrictions of San José, not
buckling up children in child restraints and
boosters, and having an extra drink since
the limit is now 0.75 and jail is reserved
only for repeat offenders and only if
convicted.
On Tuesday legislators voted against the
harsh sanctions that the same legislative
body approved less than two years before.
Now, the fate of the original law that some
call harsh falls on the hands of Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias, who has the power to
veto.
In a poll by Telenoticias during their noon
hour news broadcast 87% of the almost 9.000
callers said the law as amended serves no
purpose.

There were no
line ups at the Cosevi in La Uruca
yesterday. Renewing
a drivers license took no more than
30 minutes in most cases, a definite
contrast to the long lines and hours
of waiting around the day before.
