Alcatel Pays Up For "Social Harm"
The giant telecommunications firm Alcatel
has agreed to pay ¢5.7 billion colones to
the government for "daño social" (social
harm), resulting from accusations of
corruption and bribery in the ICE-Alcatel
case.
The agreement had been reached between the
telecom and the Procuraduría General de la
República (PGR) last February 24, which the
company had 15 days to make good on the
payment.
The money goes directly into the coffers of
the Ministerio de Hacienda, which is being
asked by Ana Lorena Brenes, Procuradura
General de la República (Attorney General)
to be invested in collective social
programs.
The Attorney General explained that
indemnity actions for social harm to the
other defendants in the case ICE-Alcatel is
still in the process. This means, according
to Brenes, that the payment made by the
French company does not benefit the rest of
the defendants.
The ICE-Alcatel trial is scheduled to begin
on April 13.
