Bridge Repair To Cause More Congestion Today

If you are out an about on the autopista General Cañas from San José to Alajuela before the Virilla river, better arm yourself with patience. And lots of it.

The MOPT has begun work this morning on repaired the concrete guard rail on the westbound section of the bridge.

The barrier was damaged last week when a truck ran into it, creating a break in one the concrete sections.

The work is expected to be carried out all day and may be on Sunday, with one of the two lanes closed off completely.

The bridge over the Virilla river has been called the "platina" bridge, referring to the problems the MOPT has had in repairing the metal plate or platina that covers a 4 inch gap acorss the bridge, where two spans meet.

The bridge has been operating with the gap for months after several repair attempts failed.

Last weeks accident is said to be caused by the platina when a heavy truck swerved to avoid another vehicle, slamming into the concrete barrier.
