Assassinations and Arrests Continue in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA - The Committee of Relatives of the Detained Disappeared of Honduras (COFADEH) denounced the continuation of human rights violations in that nation after Porfirio Lobo assumed power.

"Since January 27 to date three unionists of the National Front of Popular Resistance were killed and at least another 5 were tortured in clandestine jails," informed Bertha Oliva, COFADEH president.

Oliva revealed that representatives of the institutions that supported the coup in June 28 still occupy their posts and even pro-coup Gen. Romeo Vasquez was appointed manager of the Honduran Telecommunications Company.

Also intact are the Death Squads that were reactivated when hooded soldiers kidnapped President Manuel Zelaya and took him by force to Costa Rica, she said.

COFADEH counted at least 700 violations of citizen rights, including crimes, outrages, rapes and illegal arrests.

Referring to an announcement by authorities to create a Truth Commission regarding events of June 28, Oliva declared that that institution cannot function in a framework of human rights violations.

COFADEH leader denounced that President Lobo aims to install this commission to achieve recognition of the international community in view of the rejection of many countries of a government emerged after disruption of institutional order.
