Virilla Partial Closing Meant A Traffic Nightmare On Saturday

The partial closing of the Virilla bridge (San José - Alajuela) on the autopista General Cañas caused a virtual nightmare for the tens of thousands of drivers who had no other option or weren't aware of the announced closing.

The closure of the right lane over the bridge was to repair the concrete barrier that had been damaged the week earlier by a truck slamming into it to avoid a vehicle that had slowed down due to the "platina" problem, the failure to repair the 4 inch gap between the spans, on the bridge.

By 9am traffic on the autopista to Alajuela had backed up to the México hospital. By noon traffic was backed up to the Barceló San José Palacio hotel. The time to travel through the bridge was between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on where in the line one happened to be.

Traffic in Santa Ana was also affected by the Virilla partial closing.

Traffic on the San José - Caldera at the Santa Ana intersection as backed up to more than a 1 kilometre in the afternoon, as traffic moving through Lindora enroute to Belén was at a snail's pace.
