Panama Fosters Healthy Feeding Campaign

PANAMA - Panamanian health authorities are starting a campaign in favour of healthy diet in the country, to support the consumption of fruits and vegetables to fight diseases associated with obesity.

The promoters said the initiative goes for including at least five portions a day of such food each day in the population's diet.

Panamanian Public Health Ministry experts warned that diseases related to overweight cost the government around $100 million a year.

Problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart diseases may be prevented with a healthy diet, based on fruit and vegetable consumption, avoiding smoking and alcohol.

The National Secretariat for Food Security said that 33.6 percent of the Panamanian adults is overweighted and 18.3 percent suffers obesity.

Around 480,000 people suffer high blood pressure, originating expenses of around $40 million in consultations only.
