Costa
Ricans Drink In Moderation, Study Reveals
A study produced by the Latin American
School of Sciences reveals that only 5% of
Costa Ricans drink heavily, consuming about
65% of the alcohol sold in the country. The
study also shows that 57% of all Costa
Ricans drink alcohol, but do so in
moderation.
The school study also shows that 1% of all
adults have a serious drinking problem.
Costa Ricans, on average, consume some 3.9
litres of alcohol a year, with men consuming
more, 6.06 litres, where women consume on
average 1.74 litres a year.
43% of the population does not drink any
alcohol, while 72% say they don't drink more
than four drinks per night, according to
Carlos Sojo, co-ordinator of the study.
The study results come at a time when Costa
Ricans are being asked to make a social
change in their behaviour when it comes to
drinking and driving.
The new Ley de Tránsito (traffic law) was
introduced in December 2008 getting tough on
drivers who insist on drinking and driving,
with heavy fines and jail.
