Taxi Union Threatens Protest If Porteo Not Eliminated

The taxi union is threatening triplicating the actions of the porteadores (informal taxis) if the legislators does not vote in favour of eliminating the porteo from the commercial code.

The Foro Nacional de Taxis is expecting that on Wednesday legislators vote in favour of eliminating the article that prohibits the "porteo de personas", thus eliminating once and for all informal taxi services in Costa Rica.

If the contrary, the taxi union has threatened to take to the streets on Thursday in protest.

On the other side of the argument, the porteadores are expecting the legislator to vote against the removal of the porteo. In the event that legislator vote in favour of the removal, they too have threatened more action.

Last week porteadores took to the streets and police has to tear gas and force to remove a group blocking traffic.

The porteadores haven't said when they will take to the streets to protest if the legislation goes against them, but assure that protests will take place.
