Panama Police Controls Protest-Hit Areas

PANAMA - Panama's National Police activated on Wednesday operations in areas affected by protests on Tuesday, when 227 workers were detained and several vehicles damaged.

According to morning news programs, police is verifying workers of several real estate projects located in main Balboa Avenue, in Panama City.

Leaders of the Single Union of Construction Workers and Allied (SUNTRACS) denounced that police is preventing the staff from gaining access to the works.

SUNTRACS and the National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESCO) said yesterday's clashes were triggered by police forces. The workers were distributing leaflets against several government measures, including the tax reform law. Then, the riot police unit used tear gas and clashes ensued, resulting in the arrest of dozens of workers.

National Police Subcommissioner Javier Fanuco ruled out that today's actions were seeking to prevent entry into construction projects.

This is a routine operation envisaging verification of possible pending cases to guarantee the security of the people.
