Panama Police Controls
Protest-Hit Areas
PANAMA - Panama's National Police activated
on Wednesday operations in areas affected by
protests on Tuesday, when 227 workers were
detained and several vehicles damaged.
According to morning news programs, police
is verifying workers of several real estate
projects located in main Balboa Avenue, in
Panama City.
Leaders of the Single Union of Construction
Workers and Allied (SUNTRACS) denounced that
police is preventing the staff from gaining
access to the works.
SUNTRACS and the National Front for the
Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESCO)
said yesterday's clashes were triggered by
police forces. The workers were distributing
leaflets against several government
measures, including the tax reform law.
Then, the riot police unit used tear gas and
clashes ensued, resulting in the arrest of
dozens of workers.
National Police Subcommissioner Javier
Fanuco ruled out that today's actions were
seeking to prevent entry into construction
projects.
This is a routine operation envisaging
verification of possible pending cases to
guarantee the security of the people. |
