U.S. to establish weapons
control office in El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR - The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) will establish a
regional office in El Salvador, as part of
an agreement to control arms trafficking in
Central America, officials said Wednesday.
Assistant director of operations, Howard
Coto, said the ATF office will give advice
to the new national police department
specializing on firearms control.
The ATF will make a diagnosis on the
procedures and the mechanisms used by the
local institutions in the cases related to
trafficking and use of firearms and
explosives.
According to official figures, five years
ago, there were 500,000 firearms in El
Salvador in civilian hands and half of them
were not registered. |
