Guatemala Court Approves
Ex-President's Extradition to U.S.
GUATEMALA - A Guatemalan criminal court
approved the extradition of ex-president
Alfonso Portillo to the United States, where
he will face money laundering charges,
according to reports reaching here
Wednesday.
"This court finds the U.S. government's
extradition request against Alfonso
Portillo, accused of crimes of conspiracy to
engage in money laundering, will go ahead,"
the Fifth Sentencing Court's decision said.
Guatemalan police detained Portillo in
January after the United States requested
his extradition to face charges dating back
to his presidency.
Portillo served as Guatemalan president
between 2000 and 2004 and went to live in
Mexico after his term. He was extradited to
Guatemala in 2008 on charges that he had
collaborated during his presidency with the
military to embezzle up to 1 million U.S.
dollars from public funds.
The United States accused the former
Guatemalan president of delivering 1.5
million dollars to accounts controlled by
his ex-wife and his daughter. |
