OPEC, South America to Expand
Cooperation
QUITO - Ecuadorian Germanico Pinto,
current chairman of the Organization of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), called
to encourage South-South talks and
cooperation with the Union of South American
Nations(UNASUR).
Pinto, also Ecuadorian minister of
Non-Renewable Natural Resources, submitted
his request at the opening of the 156th
Conference of the Organization of Petroleum
Exporting Countries in Vienna, Austria.
On behalf of Ecuador, smallest of the
12-member OPEC countries, the minister
proposed the Yanusi-ITT project to avoid
generating 410M tons of carbon dioxide in
its Amazonian area if the international
community pays for 50% the oil income
Ecuador will lose in halting oil production.
Ecuador's Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini 850M
barrel reserves is located in Yasuni
National Park that is rated among the top
world biodiversity hosts.
Among his country's top oil industry goals
lie keeping the world oil market stable,
using energy to boost sustainable
development and linking safe energy usage to
keeping a clean environment. |
